Patton’s Big Bang

Bolt upright,
through undeafened blankets, I sat
shattered out of sleep,
by a loudest noise I can ever hear
intact. The partner breathed on
evenly unscathed, and the snug dog
snored,
while my jangled auditory nerve-ends rang like metal
for an answer. Forced to account
for the novel aural shock,
I saw soon enough in my brittle aftermath
that this entire —
false — alarm was all in me, a stranger
stranger now
by so much than before.
Whoever it was
that said with such easy self-assurance
“The ear
absolutely has no imagination”
no longer speaks for me:
brand-new toller of purely private primate-dream-decibels.
